This dish is very easy to put together if you are in a hurry and makes a great holiday or weekend breakfast meal. It is also a good way to to use any leftover or stale bread you may have on the counter. If you want something special for breakfast, but don’t have the time to cook, this easy, low sugar, overnight refrigerator french toast bake is a great option. Your hungry family will be delighted and love you for it!
Ingredients
1 loaf of french bread (Stale is okay)
5 eggs
1.5 cups of milk
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp vanilla
1/4 tsp salt
Directions
Cut or tear bread into cubes.
Arrange cubes in a buttered 9 by 13-inch Pyrex baking dish.
Combine 5 eggs, 1.5 cups of milk, 1 tsp sugar, 1tsp vanilla, 1/4 tsp salt and mix well.
Pour mixture over the bread in the baking dish, making sure all the bread is covered evenly with the mixture. Spoon some of the mixture in between the cubes if necessary.
Cover the baking dish with foil and place in the refrigerator to soak overnight.
In morning remove the tin foil and dot the top of the bread with butter and cinnamon sugar.
Cover the dish with tin foil and bake for 35 minutes at 350 degrees. After 35 minutes remove the tin foil and bake another 15 minutes.
Remove from oven and let cool a few minutes.
Serve piping hot with your favorite syrup or jam.
Since this dish is made the previous night, you save time in the morning. This recipe should feed at least six hungry people. Decrease the cooking time a little and keep the dish covered the entire cooking time to keep the french toast moist or if you like it crisp, bake it little longer. Yum!
